INDIANAPOLIS – The Hoosier Helmet Trophy will stay with Valparaiso after the Beacons earned a 47-3 victory over Butler on Saturday afternoon. Butler scored the first points of the day on their opening drive, but a stellar performance from Nimz would lead Valpo to victory.
How It Happened
Nimz orchestrated the offense in the first half without star running back Robert Washington. The Beacons still put up 30 points over the opening 20 minutes to secure a 30-3 halftime lead. 17 more points over the final 20 minutes took us to our final score of 47-3.
Nimz completed 19 of his 24 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown to his stat line to end the first half. Orekoya took a majority of the running back reps in the first half and would end the contest with 69 yards on the ground. In the second half, Washington took 14 carries for 102 yards and two scores.
Bret Bushka led Butler with 82 passing yards and 39 rushing yards. The best completion of the day went to
Johnny O'Shea on the first possession of the game. The 48-yard gain put BU into field goal range and
JJ Wadas would connect on a 27-yarder to get BU on the scoreboard.
Valpo put up 421 yards of total offense and averaged 6.9 yards per play in the victory. They were great on third down, converting on 10 of their 14 chances.
