The Butler women's soccer team improved to 5-0 after a 1-0, BIG EAST Conference win over Marquette at the Sellick Bowl on Thursday, March 11. The Golden Eagles move to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in conference.
How it Happened:
Butler came out of the locker room ready to go, putting the pressure on early. Butler was firing on all cylinders, but saw their final passes towards goal come up short.
In the first eight minutes, Butler had seven shots against the Golden Eagles and would go on to out-shoot Marquette 14-1 in the first half, closing out the first period tied at 0-0.
In the second half, Marquette came out with more composure and patience and was able to string together a few good series' that threatened the Bulldogs. While the Butler defense stood strong, the score was still deadlocked late into the second half.
Gretchen Skoglund provided a spark off the bench in the second half with her bursts of speed up top, which put pressure on Marquette's defense. Skoglund had a fantastic run down the field and whipped in a cross to
Abigail Isger, who hit a hard and low shot that the Marquette keeper was able to handle in the wet conditions with 15 minutes left in the game.
In the 84th minute, Butler had a corner taken by Isger, who sent in a high curling ball towards the near post where
Claire Farrington was able to get her head on it and send it to the top right corner.
Butler was able to hold off the Golden Eagles' advances in the last six minutes to claim the shutout and move to 5-0 on the season.
