Seton Hall pushed across single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to post a come-from-behind, 5-4 win over visiting Butler Sunday afternoon in South Orange, N.J.
Despite the Sunday setback, the Bulldogs still took two of three from the host Pirates in the BIG EAST opener for both teams this weekend.
Butler is now 9-8 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall picks up their first conference win (1-2) of the season and is 4-7 overall.
Butler only had six hits in the contest, but they made the most of those as four were for extra bases.
Karli Ricketts went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Her two hits were a double and her fourth home run of 2021. Freshman
Monique Hoosen added a solo home run, her third of the season.
The two-run shot by Ricketts gave Butler a 4-3 advantage in the third inning, a score that held until the bottom of the sixth.
Ricketts came on in relief of starter
Alyssa Graves to pitch the final 5.1 innings. She allowed only the two runs in the final two frames, but took the loss. She struck out four. Seton Hall had 11 total hits.
Seton Hall's run in the sixth came on an RBI double by Shelby Smith. Smith came on in relief and picked up the win by pitching the final five scoreless innings. Hailey Arteaga's single to right field scored Darby Pandolfo in walk-off fashion.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday, beginning a three-game conference series with Villanova. It serves as the home opener for Butler. The teams are scheduled for a single game Friday afternoon and a doubleheader Saturday.
