Butler fell at Creighton by a score of 4-2 Wednesday afternoon in Omaha. The Bulldogs received goals from
DJ Hooks and
Tommy Visser, but were unable to overcome the Bluejays on their home field.
With the results, Butler is now 1-1-2 in BIG EAST play and 1-5-2 overall. Creighton improves to 3-3 overall (and 3-1 in conference matches).
The teams will meet again in Indianapolis April 10 in the regular season finale. The modified spring 2021 conference schedule includes home-and-home series against teams in the Midwest region.
Visser's goal in the 44
th minute tied the match at 1-1. His second career goal was assisted by Hooks and
Hemi Nasser. The teams would go into the locker room tied.
Creighton got on the board just 72 seconds into the second half as Mark O'Neill found the net. Diego Gutierrez made it 3-1 by converting a penalty kick in the 58
th minute.
Hooks pulled the Bulldogs back within one in the 72
nd minute, scoring the first goal of his Butler career. That 3-2 Creighton would be extended back to two goals seven minutes later.
The physical match included 18 fouls by the Bluejays. The teams combined for five yellow cards.
Creighton held a 16-12 advantage in shots. Five Bulldogs each registered two shots in the contest.
Butler keeper
Gabriel Gjergji saw his scoreless streak end at 395 minutes with Creighton's first goal in the 31
st minute. He made four saves on the day.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday with a road match at DePaul. Butler defeated the Blue Demons, 5-0, in Indianapolis March 3 in the first meeting between the two teams.
