A golden goal in the 93
rd minute from
Hemi Nasser lifted the Bulldogs to a 1-0 win over DePaul in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday afternoon. The win moves Butler to 2-5-2, 2-1-2 in the BIG EAST as the Blue Demons shifts to 2-3-2, 2-3-0 in conference.
Butler and DePaul vied for possession throughout most of the first 45 minutes of play. The Blue Demons tightened up their defense from the first match-up of the season, limiting the Bulldogs to just one shot the entire first period.
Things got physical after halftime, as all four yellow cards (three on the Bulldogs) were handed out in the last 23 minutes of regulation. Butler came up with four shots in the second half, forcing DePaul's goalkeeper to make two saves.
All five of Butler's corner kick opportunities came in the second period, including three within in the 77
th minute, but the Bulldogs could not convert. For the fourth time this season, Butler found itself heading to extra time.
Ultimately, the Bulldogs only needed three overtime minutes for
Tommy Visser to send cross from the left wing that allowed Nasser to head in the game-winner.
The golden goal from Nasser was his first goal since scoring in Butler's season-opener on Feb. 5 against SIU-Edwardsville. He had an assist against Creighton earlier this week. Nasser is one of five Bulldogs to score a goal this season.
Gabriel Gjergji earned his fourth shutout of the year and picked up a save in the first period. Gjergji has played every minute between the pipes for Butler, which includes a total 53 overtime minutes this season.
Butler earns the 2-0 sweep over DePaul for the year as a result of the BIG EAST divisional home-and-home schedule for the 2021 spring season.
The Bulldogs will have a mid-week bye before heading to Milwaukee, Wis. for a match-up with Marquette on Saturday, March 27.
