SCOUTING MOREHEAD STATE: The Eagles are 1-3 overall after taking a tough 24-21 road loss at Davidson last weekend. Morehead State led 21-14 after three quarters, but would not be able to hang on for the conference win. The Eagles attacked the Wildcats through the air in their last game. QB Mark Pappas threw for 284 yards and three touchdowns in the setback. Through four games, Pappas has completed 60% of his passes for 746 yards and eight touchdowns. His top two targets are BJ Byrd and Thomas Campbell-Clay. On the other side of the ball, BU will need to game plan for middle linebacker Vincent Winey. The senior from Washington D.C. has 45 tackles in 2021, twice as many as any other player on the roster.
Pappas threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns last year vs. Butler.
LAST GAME: The Bulldogs held a three-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on for the win at Brown Field. Valparaiso claimed the Hoosier Helmet trophy with a 28-25 victory. Robert Washington ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns to lead Valpo to victory. The 'Dawgs ran more plays, recorded more first downs and posted more total yards than their opponent, but were outscored 14-8 in the fourth to move to 0-3 on the season.
Kavon Samuels was responsible for 165 all-purpose yards vs. Valpo (88 rush / 77 receiving).
DUAL THREAT: Kavon Samuels rushed the ball 20 times at Valpo and also caught 10 passes. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry on the ground and came up with a 31-yard gain on a pass from
Nick Orlando in the second quarter at Valpo to set up a BU field goal.
The last Bulldog to catch 10+ passes in a game at Butler was Stephen Dennis (11) against Valparaiso on Nov. 16, 2019.
SERIES HISTORY: Morehead State leads the all-time series 15-8, but each program has recorded five wins over the last 10 meetings.
Butler beat Morehead State at home in 2018 (24-21). The Eagles won at the Sellick Bowl in 2016 54-28.
FANTASTIC FRESHMEN: Yogi Flager,
Isaac Kolosik, and
JJ Wadas have all immediately impacted the program. Flager leads Butler with 209 receiving yards. He averages 20.9 yards per catch and 69.7 yards per game. Kolosik leads Butler with 24 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and one interception. Wadas is a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts this year. He has hit from 38, 27 and 23 yards out.
17 freshmen are listed on the current Butler two-deep depth chart.
START TO FINISH: The Bulldogs have outscored opponents in the first and third quarters this season, but the second and fourth quarters have led to their overall record. BU is +7 in the first quarter and +4 in the third. They have been outscored by 18 points in the second and 20 in the fourth.
Butler scored 15 points in the second half at Valpo. They had only scored 10 second half points combined in the prior two games.
ORLANDO GIVES BU OPTIONS: Backup QB
Nick Orlando has lined up all over the field for Butler in the 2021 spring season. He has two touchdowns, 13 rush attempts, two completed passes, two receptions and one punt return.
Orlando led Butler in scoring during the 2019 season with 84 points coming off 14 rushing touchdowns.
