Wilmer Cabrera, Jr.'s golden goal in the 100
th minute gave visiting Butler a 1-0 win over Xavier Saturday afternoon in Cincinnati.
With the result, Butler improves to 3-2-2 in BIG EAST play (and 3-6-2 overall). Xavier falls to 3-7-1 (0-5-1 BIG EAST).
Cabrera, Jr.'s tally was his fourth goal of the season.
Jack Haywood served up the assist.
The physical match included seven yellow cards and 33 fouls.
Each team fired seven shots in the match. Cabrera, Jr. and
Hemi Nasser combined for six of the Bulldogs' shots.
Gabriel Gjergji registered his fifth shutout of the season; he made three saves.
As part of a modified 2021 spring schedule, Butler played each of the BIG EAST's Midwest division foes twice. The Bulldogs and Xavier played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in Indianapolis March 13. The rematch Saturday in Cincinnati was heading that way until Cabrera, Jr.'s heroics. Â
Creighton's win over DePaul Friday solidified the two Midwest representatives to the upcoming 2021 BIG EAST Tournament (Creighton and Marquette).
The Bulldogs conclude the regular season Saturday, hosting Creighton at Varsity Field. The 11:30 a.m. kick will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
