RV @ButlerMSoccer Earns Third Conference Win, Shuts Out Villanova

INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler men's soccer team blanked Villanova on Wednesday, picking up its third conference victory of the season and fourth overall shutout. The (rv) Bulldogs (8-3-1, 3-1-1 BIG EAST) converted a penalty kick in the first half and added an insurance goal with 14 minutes on the clock. The Wildcats (5-5-2, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) outshot Butler, 16-12, and had two more shots on goal, but stout defense and superb goalkeeping from the Bulldogs kept the visitors completely out of the net.

Key Moments
  • 32' | Jack Haywood finds Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. at the top of the penalty area. On a give-and-go, Cabrera, Jr. chips it right back to Haywood, who is fouled. Joost de Schutter knocks in the ensuing penalty kick, and the Dawgs take a 1-0 lead.
    ---HALFTIME---
  • 53' | Villanova steals a Butler pass on the Bulldogs defensive side of the field, and a quick pass finds Akinjide Awujo who breaks the defensive line. His one-on-one shot is deflected by the outstretched hand of Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji. The ball goes high into the air and toward the goal, bounces, hits the far post, and is then gathered by Gjergji.
  • 76' | Jack Haywood switches field at the half line and finds Jack Streberger on the far side. Streberger carries down the left side of the pitch to the six, makes a move back up the field to create space, and sneaks the ball past the Villanova keeper and just inside the far post. The Bulldogs are now up two goals.
