INDIANAPOLIS – Butler had their three-match winning streak snapped Sunday at the hands of visiting St. John's. The Red Storm took a 3-0 decision by a score of 25-22, 25-15, 25-21.
The Bulldogs are now 10-10 overall with a 4-4 mark against conference foes. St. John's improves to 15-6 (6-2 BIG EAST).
STAT OF THE MATCH: St. John's hit .275 for the match, including .500 in the second set.
SET 1: St. John's 25-22
The Bulldogs led 13-8 midway through the opening frame before St. John's fought back to tie the game at 15-15. With the match tied 21-21, St. John's was able to take four of the final five points to post the win. Butler stayed in the opening set with six blocks as a team and five kills from
Amina Shackelford individually. Six Red Storm hitters had kills in the opening set, led by five from Eleonora Tosi.
SET 2: St. John's 25-15
A 6-6 score quickly turned into a 16-8 Red Storm advantage as the visitors hit .500 in the set. Tosi and Rachele Rastelli each had four kills for SJU, which also limited Butler to a .097 hitting clip.
SET 3: St. John's 25-21
Butler jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the third set before St. John's was able to chip away and tie the game at 12-12. The final tie came at 18-18 following a
Destiny Cherry kill. A closing 7-3 proved to be the four-point differential.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Shackelford had a team-high 10 kills for the Bulldogs; she added four blocks and a career-high eight digs. The eight digs led the Bulldogs.
- Butler had 11 blocks compared to seven for the Red Storm.
- Grace Boggess had five kills and was part of six blocks. Boggess's five kills cam on only seven swings for a match-best .714 hitting percentage.
- Freshman Cora Taylor had 29 assists.
- Megan Sheridan added nine kills for Butler.
- Tosi led a balanced Red Storm offense with 10 kills.
- No Butler player registered double digits in digs. For Butler libero Jaymeson Kinley, it was only the second time this season that she did not dig 10 balls in a match. Conversely, she has tallied 20+ digs in a match 11 times this season.
- Marisa Guisti missed her second consecutive match for the Bulldogs due to injury.
- St. John's libero Bree Martin is from New Albany, Ind.; her nine digs led the Red Storm.
