@ButlerVB Returns to Winning Ways Saturday at Providence


Butler capped off a weekend BIG EAST road trip with a 25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20 win Saturday afternoon at Providence.

With the result, Butler is now 11-11 and 5-5 in the BIG EAST; Providence falls to 2-8 in conference play and 10-12 overall.
 
STAT OF THE MATCH: Butler hit .260 for the match, including marks of better than .300 in each of the three sets they won.
 
SET 1: Butler 25-16
The Bulldogs found themselves ahead 14-8 midway through the opening set and held a similar advantage through the end of the set. Mariah Grunze and Amina Shackelford each had five kills in the frame as the Bulldogs hit a staggering .444.

SET 2: Butler 25-18
The set was tied 12-12 before a short Butler spurt provided the Bulldogs with a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Butler won the final five points of the set for the final margin. Grunze and Megan Sheridan each had four kills in the set, as the Bulldogs hit .308.

SET 3: Providence 25-22
The home team would not go down without a fight, taking a 16-10 lead midway through the third set. Butler would climb back within a single point on several occasions but never could take the lead. The Friars' defense forced nine Butler attack errors in the set.  

SET 4: Butler 25-20
The Bulldogs were able to close the door with a run that turned a 16-16 score into a 25-20 win. Butler returned to its strong offensive output with a .344 hitting percentage. Destiny Cherry had a team-best four kills in the set.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • The two teams will meet again Nov. 18 at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
  • Shackelford led three Bulldogs in double-figures with 14 kills.
  • Grunze had 13 kills, while Sheridan added 11.
  • Libero Jaymeson Kinley had a match-high 21 digs on the afternoon; it was the 12th time this season that she has registered 20 or more digs.
  • Freshman setter Cora Taylor had 35 assists, seeing action in only three of the four sets.
  • Butler had a 5-3 advantage in blocks.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs return to Hinkle Fieldhouse for a pair of home weekend contests. Butler hosts Marquette Friday before DePaul visits on Sunday.
