No. 16 Marquette Tops @ButlerVB Friday Night at Hinkle



No. 16 Marquette took a three-set decision over Butler Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The visiting Golden Eagles won the match by a score of 25-15, 26-24, 25-21.

With the result, Butler is now 11-12 and 5-6 in the BIG EAST; Marquette improves to 11-1 in conference play and 20-2 overall.

The Hinkle Faithful celebrated a fun promotion with Girl Dad Day, welcoming a number of young ladies and their fathers.
 
STAT OF THE MATCH: Marquette hit .325, compared to .216 for the Bulldogs.
 
SET 1: Marquette 25-15
The visiting Golden Eagles hit .515 and had five blocks in the opening set in building an early lead and pushing it to a 25-15 win. Aubrey Hamilton had five kills for Marquette. Mariah Grunze had three kills in the frame to lead the Bulldogs.

SET 2: Marquette 26-24
Butler responded with a strong second set. Back-to-back Grunze kills broke a 17-17 tie and sparked a 4-1 lead that gave Butler a 22-18 lead. Marquette would come back to tie the set and ultimately was able to fend off a Butler set point at 24-23, capturing the final three points of the set for the final margin. Amina Shackelford had eight kills for the Bulldogs in the second set. The set was tied on eight occasions.

SET 3: Marquette 25-21
Marquette used an 8-2 run to take a 16-9 advantage midway through the set. The Golden Eagles were able to withstand a late Butler rally as the margin closed to four late in the set. Hamilton led Marquette with six kills in the frame.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
 
  • The two teams also played Sept. 24 in Milwaukee, with Marquette taking a 3-1 decision.
  • Butler had a 9-5 advantage in blocks. All five of Marquette's blocks came in the opening set.
  • Shackelford led Butler with 12 kills; she recorded a double-double by adding a career-high 12 digs. She was part of six blocks.
  • Libero Jaymeson Kinley entered the match with 1,507 career digs, which includes her three seasons at Butler and the 2018 season at Austin Peay. That was good for 42nd nationally at the start of the night. She added a match-high 19 digs Friday.
  • Grunze had 11 kills, hitting .345 for the match.
  • Freshman setter Cora Taylor had 29 assists.
  • Hamilton led Marquette with 14 kills; she was one of four Golden Eagles with nine or more kills on the night.
  • Marquette libero Carly Skrabak had 17 digs.
 
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs continue their weekend homestand Sunday, hosting DePaul at Hinkle Fieldhouse. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
