INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler volleyball team claimed their 12th win of the season with a 3-2 victory over DePaul on Sunday afternoon (21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 15-13). BU will stay ahead of the Blue Demons in the BIG EAST standings with a 6-6 conference record.
STAT OF THE MATCH: Destiny Cherry came up with a career-high 17 kills! She posted a .438 attack percentage with just three errors on 32 swings.
SET 1: DePaul 25-21
Jill Pressly led DePaul to victory by recording eight of the team's 16 kills. She hit .438 and added six digs in the opener. Butler scored three-straight points near the end of the action to get back within three, but Maggie Jones would go to Pressly once again for the 25th point.
SET 2: Butler 25-20
Butler used a 4-0 scoring run to tie the score at 15-15. Cherry had two kills during that stretch which led to a DePaul timeout. The Bulldogs used a 3-0 run later in the action to grab a 22-18 advantage. Moments later Amina Schackelford would get BU to set point and an ace from
Rylie Tam would even the match 1-1.
SET 3: DePaul 25-23
BU went out in front 18-13 with a
Rylie Tam ace, but the Blue Demons came storming back to tie the action at 19-19. Pressly was aggressive in the third with five kills on 17 attempts. She got DePaul to set point and DePaul would go up 2-1 after a kill from Aly Kindelberger.
SET 4: Butler 25-16
The Bulldogs dominated the fourth set. A 9-0 scoring spree moved the home team in front 19-8 and they never looked back on their way to a 25-16 win. Cherry led the way with four kills and Grunze added three.
SET 5: Butler 15-13
BU raced out to a 4-1 lead in the final set, but DePaul would close the gap to just one at 4-3. Butler never trailed, but the Blue Demons pulled within one at 14-13. The Bulldogs called a timeout and would call off the comeback with a 15-13 victory. Shackelford stood tall in the fifth with a team-best four kills. Cherry was equally as impressive with three including the match-winner.
