The Bulldogs (6-6-1, 3-2-0 BIG EAST) scored first and led at the half, but the Blue Demons (2-10-0, 0-5-0 BIG EAST) leveled the score with about 30 minutes remaining. About seven minutes later, Butler drew a foul and converted the penalty kick, providing the final 2-1 margin.
