DES MOINES, IOWA – The Drake Bulldogs defeated the Butler Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 27-24. Luke Williams made a 22-yard field goal with eight seconds left in the game to give Drake their second win of the season. With the setback, Butler moves to 7-3 on the year and 5-2 in the PFL.
Butler scored a touchdown on their opening drive, but would trail Drake 17-7 after the first quarter. Each team added a passing TD in the second quarter to give the home team a 24-14 advantage at the half. BU once again would script a scoring drive to start the second half. They took advantage of a Drake fumble and would cover 42 yards in just four plays to make the score 24-21.
Butler pushed forward to tie the game at 24-24 with 4:52 to play in the fourth after a 33-yard field goal from
Luka Zurak. The BU defense would stuff Drake on third and one to get the ball back to the offense, but a costly Butler interception with less than a minute to play would set up a short field for Drake and the late field goal would give the home team a three-point victory.
Butler had 10 more first downs than Drake and won time of possession by more than ten minutes. Drake however had a better rushing attack than BU on Saturday and the home team went 3-for-3 in the red zone.
Dorian Boyland led Drake on the ground with 99 yards and a score on 23 carries. QB Luke Bailey passed for 178 yards and a score.
For Butler, Bushka found a different receiver for all three of his touchdown passes. He completed 25 throws for 248 yards and also led the team with 57 rushing yards.
Joey Suchy was the top back for the Bulldogs on Saturday. He took 19 handoffs and recorded 50 rushing yards. He also caught two passes for 20 yards.
Luke Wooten,
Tyler Adams and
Johnny O'Shea all caught touchdowns in Iowa Saturday afternoon. Wooten led BU with nine catches for 69 yards. Adams caught a 32-yard TD pass in the third quarter to end the day with 65 receiving yards and O'Shea opened up the scoring with a 23-yard TD pass from Bushka on the opening drive.
Connor Reid led BU in tackles with seven.
Will Mason and
Thomas Rousseau also impacted the game with interceptions.
The Bulldogs will end the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 19. Kick-off at the Sellick Bowl is set for noon.
