@ButlerSoftball Unable to Hold Lead on Huskies

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Butler softball team saw its game against Eastern Kentucky canceled, due to bad field conditions, but managed to reschedule the time for a contest with Northern Illinois on Friday, ultimately losing to the Huskies by the final score of 10-3. The Bulldogs (7-5) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but Northern Illinois (3-3) answered with three in the fifth and never looked back.
 
How It Happened
  • In the bottom of the second inning, the Bulldogs put runners on first and third with one out but could not get one across the plate.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Ellie Boyer put the ball in play and Kaylee Gross came across to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
  • In the top of the fifth, Northern Illinois forced a Bulldogs pitching change, scoring three and taking a 3-1 lead. In the bottom half, Gross singled, knocking in Sydney Carter and bringing the Bulldogs to within one, 3-2.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Huskies scored three more and pushed the lead to 6-2. In the bottom half, Gracie Voulgaris singled and sent home Ella White, making the score 6-3.
  • Northern Illinois exploded with four runs in the top of the seventh, building the lead to 10-3.
Butler Pitching
Mackenzie Griman (2-2) pitched the first 4.1 innings for Butler and took the loss. She allowed two earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two. Madison Seigworth (2.2 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 3 ER, BB, K) provided relief out of the bullpen.
 
Bulldog Bits
  • Kaylee Gross (3-4, RBI, R), with three singles, had the first multiple-hit game of her career.
  • Butler was outhit by Northern Illinois, 9-8, and had seven errors, compared to five for the Huskies.
Up Next
Butler remains in Chattanooga, Tenn., for two more games on Saturday, February 26. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play UT-Chattanooga at 12:30 pm and Southern Illinois at 3 pm.
