Lauren Fey's two-out, bases-clearing double in the top of the sixth gave Butler a come-from-behind win over DePaul Saturday afternoon in Chicago. The Bulldogs came away with a 6-5 result in the opening game of the BIG EAST series.
Butler improves to 3-0 in BIG EAST play and 15-7 overall. DePaul falls to 10-14 (0-2 BIG EAST).
With the Bulldogs trailing 4-2 entering the top of the sixth,
Mackenzie Griman led off the frame with a home run to center field. Two hits and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs. Down in the count 0-2, Fey sprayed a double to left field to score all three of her teammates and give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead.
Four of Butler's six hits on the afternoon came in the decisive sixth inning.
Alyssa Graves came on in relief, picking up the win for Butler by allowing only a single run over the final 2.1 innings. She struck out four.
DePaul took their lead with a pair of two-run home runs, one in the fourth by Kate Polucha and one in the fifth by Tori Meyer. Those blasts gave DePaul a 4-2 lead after Butler had scored two unearned runs in the second inning.
Fey went 2-for-3 on the day.
Karli Ricketts got the start in the circle for the Bulldogs, allowing four runs in 4.2 innings. She struck out five. Graves improves to 5-3 on the season by picking up the win.
Natalie Halvorson took the loss for DePaul, falling to 4-5 on the season. She allowed six runs (four earned).
The teams are scheduled for a doubleheader Sunday. The first pitch is set for Noon (Eastern, 11 a.m. Central).
