MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Butler softball team used a big sixth inning to come from behind and win its final game in the Blues City Classic. The Bulldogs (12-7) trailed IUPUI two different times throughout the game but ultimately downed the Jaguars (2-17) by the final score of 5-4.
How It Happened
- IUPUI scored one in the first inning, but Butler answered in the second when Monique Hoosen homered, also bringing in Ella White. Butler led, 2-1, after two.
- The Jaguars scored two more in the third, taking a 4-2 lead and forcing a pitching change for the Bulldogs.
- In the bottom of the sixth, a Kinley Longest single and a White double put runners on second and third. Hoosen then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring one, and Sydney Carter followed that with a single, tying the score, 4-4. Carter eventually scored on an error, giving Butler a 5-4 lead.
Butler Pitching
Madison Seigworth (5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 2 K) started for Butler in the circle, throwing 2.1 innings.
Alyssa Graves (3-3) came in from the bullpen and earned the win. In 4.2 innings of work, she allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out seven.
Bulldog Bits
- Monique Hoosen's home run, her second in as many games, was her fourth of the season and the seventh of her career.
- Alyssa Graves now has 525 career strikeouts from the pitching circle. She has moved into the second position on Butler's all-time list, trailing only Jenny Esparza (2010-2013) who had a total of 789.
- With her 29th career win, Graves has now moved into the eighth position on Butler's all-time list. She currently sits only one win behind Nikki Naffziger (2005-2008).
- The two wins this weekend extend Butler's current winning streak over IUPUI to seven games. The Jaguars' most recent win was Mar. 25, 2015, by the score of 7-0.
