ButlerVB Struck Down By St. John’s 3-0

INDIANAPOLIS — The Butler volleyball team fall to St. John's in three sets (29-27 25-13, 25-21). The Bulldogs move to 2-4 in the conference and 8-9 overall. 
 
Set 1: St. John's 29-27
The match began slowly with no team taking a significant lead until a 3-0 run gave the Red Storm an early 7-4 lead. Elise Ward then helped the Bulldogs regain the lead using a 4-0 run with a kill and serving ace to make the score 9-8. St. John's would creep back to tie the score at 16-16, but kills from Mariah Grunze and Grace Boggess gave Butler a 19-16 lead. The Johnnies then came back to tie it once again at 22-22 and the two teams would remain within a point until St. John's closed out the first set on a 3-0 spurt to win 29-27.

Set 2: St. John's 25-13
The second set was all Johnnies. Butler started on top using kills from Grunze and a serving ace by Reese Bates to reach a 7-4 lead. St. John's then caught fire going on a 7-0 run followed by a 8-0 spurt to cruise to 19-9 lead. The Red Storm continued to pile it on finishing the set with a score of 25-13. 
 
Set 3: St. John's 25-21
The momentum remained in the Johnnies favor as they would jump out to a 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run that included blocks from Boggess and Sawyer Jones to take a 11-6 lead. St. John's stormed a 4-0 spurt followed by five straight points to regain the lead at 15-12. The Red Storm added to their lead with a 4-0 run to make the score 20-14. Butler rallied back bringing the score within two points at 23-21, but the Johnnies then spoiled the comeback winning the match 25-21. 

Stat of the Match
Butler outdueled St. John's at the net tallying 14 blocking assists to the Johnnies 12. Destiny Cherry led the match with four blocks Cora Taylor and Grace Boggess each had three blocks. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Taylor finished with a team-high 19 assists, eight digs and three blocks
  • Jaymeson Kinley finished with 15 digs and five assists
  • Abby Maesch had a team-high nine kills and two blocks
  • Boggess hit for .333 percent with eight kills and three blocks 
Up Next 
The Bulldogs will head back out east next week to face Providence on Friday, October 13 at 6 p.m. and UConn Saturday, October 14 at 6 p.m.
