ButlerVB Suffers 3-2 Loss to Georgetown

INDIANAPOLIS — The Butler volleyball team falls 3-2 to Georgetown (25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-11) at Hinkle Fieldhouse for their fourth-straight five-set loss. The Bulldogs drop to 4-10 in conference matches and 10-15 overall. 
 
Set 1: Georgetown 25-21
The match started slow with no team taking a significant lead until the Hoyas rattled off a 7-0 run to take a 10-3 lead. Kills from Grace Boggess and Laiya Ebo helped the Bulldogs fight back with a 4-0 spurt to cut the lead to 10-7. Three-straight kills by Mariah Grunze then brought the score to 12-10. The Hoyas would then increase their lead to 19-14, but consecutive kills by Abby Maesch helped shorten the gap to 22-20. Georgetown quickly regained the momentum, scoring on the next play and eventually closing out the set 25-21. 

Set 2: Butler 25-23
Kills from three different Bulldogs helped give Butler an early 3-1 to start Set 2. Maesch added to the lead with a kill and serving ace to take a 6-3 lead. Georgetown used a 3-0 run to tie the set at 10-10 and continued the pressure taking a 19-17 lead. A kill and block by Boggess helped the Bulldogs regain the lead at 20-19. The score remained within a point until Elise Ward activated the takeover, ending the set with a kill and a solo block to win 25-23. 
 
Set 3: Butler 25-23
Georgetown began the third set on top with a 6-3 lead. The Bulldogs soon flipped the score after a 6-0 run with blocks from Destiny Cherry and Cora Taylor giving Butler a 10-7 lead. The lead wouldn't last long as the Hoyas quickly fought back to tie the match at 12-12. The score would remain within two points for the rest of the set with both teams going back and forth until a 3-0 run capped off by a kill from Grunze helped Butler claim Set 3. 

Set 4: Georgetown 25-17
Butler started the fourth frame on top after three straight Hoya attacking errors. Georgetown would then come right back to take the lead at 4-3 and a 6-0 spurt extended their lead to 13-8. The Hoyas continued to pile it on the Bulldogs, widening the gap to 18-10 and ultimately forcing a fifth set after winning 25-17. 

Set 5: Georgetown 15-11
The Bulldogs used kills from Grunze and Kaylee Finnegan to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Georgetown responded with a 5-0 run to make the score 7-5. A kill by Maesch and a serving ace by Ward helped tie the match at 9-9. Both teams would remain within a point until the Hoyas caught fire scoring four consecutive points to close out the match at 15-11. 

Stat of the Match
Mariah Grunze surpassed the 1,000 career kill mark after collecting 18 kills in the match. She also added 11 digs to earn her seventh double-double this season.

  • Taylor collected 51 assists and 13 digs to earn her 10th double-double of the season
  • Jaymeson Kinley posted 22 digs and nine assists
  • Grunze registered 18 kills and 11 digs 
  • Maesch tallied 18 kills, seven digs, and two serving aces
  • Boggess hit for a team-high .412 with nine kills and five blocks
  • Ward racked up 15 kills and three blocks while hitting for .379
Up Next 
The Bulldogs will remain in Indianapolis for another weekend as they get set to host UConn on Friday, Nov. 10 at noon. Butler will close out the weekend on Nov. 12 against Providence with the first serve slated for noon.
