Butler Volleyball head coach Kyle Shondell has finalized his coaching staff for his first season leading the Bulldogs' program.
Tyler Golsteyn and AJ Lux arrive at Butler, while Lauren Murray will return to the Butler staff for her second season.
Golsteyn joins the Butler staff after spending the last three seasons at Eastern Michigan. He was elevated to the program's associate head coach for the 2022 campaign after serving as EMU's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator the first two seasons.
"Tyler is well-known and well-liked in coaching and recruiting circles, and his work ethic matches or outperforms that in which we expect from our team," said Shondell. "Tyler has training and systems background in essentially all facets of the sport, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome Coach Golsteyn to the Bulldog Family."
Golsteyn helped Eastern Michigan's Raeven Chase to All-Mid American Conference first-team honors in both 2021 and 2022. Eight Eagles were named to the 2022 Academic All-MAC Team.
The Nashville, Tenn., native began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant and recruiting coordinator at North Dakota State. Golsteyn then joined the Purdue program in 2018 as the volunteer assistant coach before serving as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at East Carolina in 2019.
Golsteyn played in 81 career matches for Purdue Fort Wayne as a setter and libero from 2011-2016. During his playing career, he was a four-time Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association All-Academic selection. (Golsteyn's bio can be found here.)
Lux, a native of Shelbyville, Ind., who played locally at Roncalli High School, returns to Indiana after serving on the Missouri State staff as an assistant coach for both the indoor and beach volleyball programs. She spent three seasons at Missouri State beginning in 2020.Â
"We are ecstatic to add AJ to our staff at Butler," said Shondell. "Her experience both as a player and a coach at the Division I level will be a great asset to our athletes. In the sport of volleyball, any time you can bring an Indiana native back home again it is a good thing."
Lux tutored MSU's outside hitters to four first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selections. Amelia Flynn and Brooklyn Cink each ranked in the top 21 nationally in total kills and points during the 2020-21 campaign, and Flynn repeated as an All-Valley first-teamer in the fall 2021 season.
Lux began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Francis Marion University following a successful playing career at East Tennessee State.
While at ETSU, Lux was three-year captain and a first-team All-Southern Conference pick as a sophomore. Lux helped East Tennessee to NCAA Tournaments her junior and senior years, including becoming the first SoCon team in conference history to earn an NCAA at-large bid in 2018. She was a Senior CLASS Award nominee and on the SoCon All-Academic Team her senior year. (Lux's bio can be found here.)
Murray will begin her second season as a member of the Butler coaching staff. In 2022, she helped the Bulldogs to the program's first BIG EAST Tournament appearance since 2017. Libero Jaymeson Kinley was selected to the AVCA East All-Region Team after being recognized as the 2022 BIG EAST Libero of the Year while also earning a spot on the All-BIG EAST Team. Setter Cora Taylor also landed on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team after a vote from the head coaches.
Previously, Murray has been an assistant coach at DePauw University, Cathedral High School, North Central High School, Rev Volleyball Academy, and Team Indiana Volleyball Club. (Murray's bio can be found here.)
