HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The Butler softball team picked up one win on day one at the Thundering Herd Invitational, defeating the hosts by the score of 3-2. A second scheduled game vs. Radford was postponed, possibly to be made up on Sunday.
The Bulldogs (8-8, 0-0 BIG EAST) led the entire game but did not score after the third inning. Marshall (9-8, 0-0 Sun Belt) crept to within one run in the fifth but could not score in the game's final two innings.
Game 1: Butler- 3, Marshall- 2 (7 innings)
With two on and two outs in the top of the first inning,
Teagan O'Rilley hit a single to left-center that sent
Hailey Conger home from second base. Later, with the bases loaded,
Monique Hoosen drew a walk that gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half, Marshall scored one but stranded three. Butler took a 2-1 lead into the second.
In the third, a
Makena Alexander single to center pushed pinch runner
Kaylee Gross across for the Bulldogs. Butler's 3-1 lead held through four complete.
In the fifth, Marshall drew to within one run, 3-2, on a solo home run.
Katie Petran (6-0) threw a complete game for Butler and picked up the win. In 7.0 innings, she allowed two runs on six hits and six walks, striking out three.

- Katie Petran's win vs. Marshall was her sixth complete-game victory of the season.
- Butler's scheduled game vs. Radford was postponed due to weather and will possibly be made up on Sunday.
