HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The Butler softball team defeated Purdue for the first time since 2010, a 6-5, 10-inning victory at the Thundering Herd Invitational. The Boilermakers (8-7, 0-0 Big Ten) scored three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game, and it took three extra innings before the Bulldogs (9-9, 0-0 BIG EAST) could gain an advantage. In its second game of the day, Butler dropped one to Marshall (10-8, 0-0 Sun Belt) in five innings.
Game 3: Butler- 6, Purdue- 5 (10 innings)
Purdue scored the first run of the game, in the top of the first, on a walk, two stolen bases, and an error. In the bottom half, Butler used a
Hailey Conger single and a two-run home run from
Ella White to take the lead back, 2-1.
In the fourth,
Teagan O'Rilley drew a walk and
Monique Hoosen sent a second ball over the fence, giving the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead that held through five.
In the sixth, the Boilermakers plated three, tying the score, 4-4.
After a scoreless seventh, Purdue put one across in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half, a White sacrifice fly to center tied the game again, 5-5.
In the tenth, Conger used a sacrifice bunt to advance the placed runner,
Olivia Moxley, to third.
Cate Lehner then put the ball in play, and a Boilermaker error allowed Moxley to step on home and end the game.
Katie Petran (8.0 IP, 5R, 2ER, 7H, 2BB, 8K) started in the circle for Butler and lasted through the eighth inning.
Sydney Cammon (3-5) entered in the top of the ninth and secured the win. In 2.0 innings, she gave up only one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
Game 4: Marshall- 11, Butler- 3 (5 innings)
Marshall scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Butler answered with back-to-back home runs – from
Teagan O'Rilley and
Makena Alexander – in the top of the second. By the end of two complete, the Thundering Herd had added two more runs and held a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the third,
Ella White connected on a single.
Paige Dorsett followed up with a double to left-center field, pushing White home. In the bottom half, Marshall drew a bases-loaded walk and increased its lead to 5-3 lead after three complete.
The Thundering Herd added a pair of runs in the fourth, and then a four-run fifth inning ended the game.
Sydney Cammon (3-6) started for the Bulldogs in the circle and took the loss, lasting into the third inning. She allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.1 innings.
Kayla Noerr (1.2 IP, 6R, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, K) provided relief and finished the game.
