QUEENS, N.Y. – The Butler softball team the first game of a three-game BIG EAST series at St. John's by the score of 6-3. The Red Storm (11-13, 2-2 BIG EAST) scored in multiple innings to build a 5-0 lead after five innings. The Bulldogs (13-13, 2-2 BIG EAST) scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh but were not able to overtake the hosts.
Game 1: St. John's 6, Butler 3 (7 innings)
St. John's scored a single run in the first, third, and fourth innings and added two more in the fifth. The Red Storm led 5-0 after five complete.
Butler loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with two outs. A
Makena Alexander single pushed one run across, but a line drive to third base ended the threat with St. John's leading 5-1. The Red Storm tacked on an additional run in the bottom half.
In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs advanced base runners to first and second with one out and forced a pitching change. Two batters later, with two outs, a
Paige Dorsett double sent two runners home and pulled Butler to within three, at 6-3. St. John's pitching then produced the final out of the game.
Katie Petran (8-1) pitched the first three innings for Butler and took the loss. She allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Sydney Cammon (3.0IP, 3R, 6H, K) provided the relief and finished the game.
Bulldog Bits
- Paige Dorsett's double was her third of the season and 15th of her career.
- Cate Lehner's stolen base was her 14th of the season and 31st of her career.
- Monique Hoosen's stolen base was her second of the season and 11th of her career.
