INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler softball team lost in nine innings to Creighton in game two of a three-game BIG EAST series on Saturday, as it recognized five student-athletes on Senior Day. The Bulldogs (20-24, 9-11 BIG EAST) were up 5-3 after three innings, but the Bluejays (26-19, 10-7 BIG EAST) used strong fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-5 lead. Butler rallied with a three-run home run to extend the game, but Creighton scored thee in the ninth to win by the final score of 11-8 and tie the series at one game apiece.
Game 2: Creighton 11, Butler 8 (9 innings)
Creighton scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Butler countered with its own run in the bottom half to cut the lead in half.
In the second, the Bulldogs used a pair of singles from
Sydney Carter and
Olivia Moxley along with a fielder's choice to tie the game at two.
One inning later, Butler took the lead when
Monique Hoosen (3-5, 2B, HR, 6RBI, R) hit a bases-loaded double that cleared the bases. The Dawgs were up, 5-2.
The Bluejays scored two runs in the fourth inning and four more an inning later. After five, the visitors led, 8-5.
In the sixth, Hoosen struck again, this time with a three-run home run to left field. The 8-8 tie held through eight full innings.
In the top of the ninth, Creighton took advantage of an error, two singles, a double, and a sacrifice fly to plate the three runs it need for the win.
Butler used four pitchers in the extra-inning affair, with
Rylyn Dyer (3.2IP, 4R, 2ER, 7H, BB, 3K) starting and
Sydney Cammon (0.1IP, 2R, 2H) and
Katie Petran (1.0IP, 2R, 3H) seeing action in the fourth and fifth innings.
Kayla Noerr entered at the top of the sixth and finished the game, taking the loss. She allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits.
Bulldog Bits
- Monique Hoosen's home run was her 11th of the season and 38th of her career. Her six-RBI total was a career high.
- Hoosen's double was her third of the season and 18th of her career, and her stolen base was her third of the season and 18th of her career.
- Cate Lehner's stolen base was her 22nd of the season and 29th of her career.
- Ella White's stolen base was her fourth of the seventh of her career.
