PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Butler softball team will continue play in the consolation bracket of the BIG EAST Tournament after a Thursday morning, five-inning, shutout over Seton Hall. The No. 6 seed Bulldogs scored one in the first and then added four-run third and fourth innings to knock the No. 4 seed Pirates out of the tournament.
Consolation: #6 seed Butler 9, #4 seed Seton Hall 0 (5 innings)
In the bottom of the first inning, with
Ella White on first,
Paige Dorsett sent a ball into the gap in right-center field, allowing White to score. Butler's 1-0 lead herd through two full innings.
In the third,
Olivia Moxley (2-2, 2B) had reached third and
Cate Lehner was on second. White put a ball in play, and Seton Hall threw home to create a rundown situation. A throwing error allowed both Moxley and Lehner to score. One batter later,
Paige Dorsett (2-2, 2RBI, 2B) doubled and sent White home. Later in the inning,
Monique Hoosen connected on the Bulldogs' third double of the inning. Pinch runner
Olivia Roberts scored, giving the Dawgs a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Butler loaded the bases with three singles. A bases-clearing double from White to right center increased the lead to 8-0. Three successive walks pushed one more across, and the Dawgs were up 9-0 after four.
In the top of the fifth, the Pirates put one runner on, but three fly balls ended the game early.
Rylyn Dyer (1.1IP, BB, K) started in the circle for Butler but was knocked out of the game in the top of the second by a hard-hit ball that caused an injury.
Katie Petran (15-8) provided relief, finished the game, and was credited with the win. In 3.2 scoreless innings, she allowed three hits and a walk with one strikeout.
