Butler Gears Up for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships

The Butler track and field team gears up to compete at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in Storrs, Conn. from May 15-17. Competition will be hosted by UConn at the Sherman Sports Complex with all events being streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports Presented by Invesco QQQ.

Bulldog Men
The Bulldogs will have six runners competing in the distance events this weekend. The quartet of Jesse Hamlin, Matthew Forrester, William Zegarski, and Matteo Rosio will race in the 5,000 meters. Hamlin will look to improve on his finish last year after securing the silver medal in the 5K.

Butler will look to defend their title in the 10,000 meters after sweeping the podium last season. Jack McMahon took third last year and now enters with the fastest mark in the conference this season. He will be joined by four other Bulldogs including Forrester, Zegarski, Rosio, and Brendan Thomas.

David Slapak and Austin Gabay will look to score points in the 1,500 meters. The middle distance team will also feature Aedan Rendek and Michael Dunagan in the 800 meters.

Five Bulldogs are entered in the sprints events including Ben Bradley (100m), Joseph Pierro (200m), Troy Larrison (200m), Lairden Rogge (400m), and Dylan Walker (400m).

Butler will look to continue their success in the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 relays after receiving All-BIG EAST honors in all three events last season. 

In the field, Butler's record-holder in the pole vault, Luke Walden, will push to make the podium in consecutive seasons after finishing third last year. Cabott Craft and Michael Wells will join him in the field with Craft competing in the long jump and triple jump while Wells sets up for the shot put.

Sean Davies will round out the Bulldog competitors on the men's side in the decathlon. 

Bulldog Women
The women's distance team features four student-athletes in the 10,000 meters including Elsa Rusthoven, Ashlyn Minton, Mckenna Mazeski, and Kylie Cline. Rusthoven and Cline will both be making their outdoor 10K debuts this week. 

Freshman Hannah Moore will be the lone Bulldog competitor in the 5,000 meters.

In the middle distance, Camille El Baghlouli and Ashley Learn will look to score in the 1,500 meters.

Jocelyn Davis and Abby Brennan will lead the way in the sprints. Davis enters with the sixth fastest mark in BIG EAST for the 200 meters while Brennan holds the seventh best time in the 400 meters.

Jenna Doezema will also toe the line in the 400 meters hurdles after entering with the fourth fastest mark in the conference.

The Bulldogs have also entered a team in each relay including the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays.

Lily Wharton will represent the Bulldogs in the heptathlon. There are no other Bulldog women set to compete in the field.

Upcoming Schedule
The event will begin on Thursday, May 15 with the first events of the heptathlon and decathlon at 12 p.m. ET. and will wrap up with the men's and women's 10,000 meters. 

BIG EAST student-athletes will return to action on Friday with the final events of the multis beginning at 12 p.m. ET while the first event on the track is slated for 2 p.m. The final event of the day will be the men's 5,000 meters at 9 p.m.

The outdoor conference championships will conclude on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. with the women's discus while the first track event is at. The schedule will come to a close after the 4x400 relays at 3:45 p.m. The awards ceremony will then take place directly after around 4:15 p.m.
