Bryson Cardinal, a local product who will graduate from Guerin Catholic High School in the coming weeks, has signed an athletic aid agreement to join the Butler Basketball program.
Â
Cardinal, a 6-7 forward, scored 1,054 points and pulled down 582 rebounds in his career at Guerin Catholic. He averaged 19.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists as a senior, leading the team to a 23-5 record and an appearance in the regional finals. Cardinal earned IBCA Academic All-State first team honors. Over the course of his high school career, he helped Guerin Catholic to the 2024 state semifinals and a Class 3A state runner-up finish as a sophomore in 2023.
Â
"We're excited to add Bryson to our program," said Butler coach Thad Matta. "He's a talented player who has a high basketball IQ and a relentless motor on the court. Bryson is embracing the opportunity to develop his game and his body early on within our program. He's going to push us in practice from his first day on campus and he's a solid addition to both our program and our university."
Â
Both of his parents played at Purdue. His father, Brian, was a three-time captain and three-time All-Big Ten performer at Purdue (1996-2000) before his 12-year NBA career included winning the 2011 championship with the Dallas Mavericks. His mother, Danielle, was a member of Purdue women's teams that won back-to-back Big Ten championships, appeared in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments and won the 1999 national championship.
Â
Butler enters the 2025-26 season off an appearance in the inaugural College Basketball Crown. Coach Thad Matta's Bulldogs have added five impact transfers in
Michael Ajayi (Gonzaga),
Yame Butler (Drexel),
Jalen Jackson (Purdue Fort Wayne),
Drayton Jones (South Carolina State), and
Yohan Traore (SMU). That group joins returners
Finley Bizjack, who averaged 10.3 points per game for the Bulldogs last season;
Jamie Kaiser Jr., who missed the entire 2024-25 season with an ankle injury; andÂ
Evan Haywood, who started both College Basketball Crown games. Butler also welcomes a Top 25 recruiting class.
