Butler Comes Up Just Short in 13–11 Loss to UT Martin

INDIANAPOLIS - After a hard fought nine innings, the Butler Bulldogs were defeated by UT Martin 13-11 on Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, Logan Crock hit a two-out grand slam in the top of the seventh that put Butler back into the game after being down most of the game to that point. With the win, UT Martin improves to 2-1 on the season while Butler slides to 1-2. The final game of the series is set for 2 p.m. tomorrow in Martin, Tenn. 

BULLDOG HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Crock went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and chipped in five RBIs.
  • Danny Gavin was 1-for-5 with a run scored and a walk. 
  • Matthew Rhoades tallied a hit and a run scored.
  • Gavin Gilmore had another stellar day at the plate, recording three singles, a walk and a stolen base.
  • Will Burgess went 1-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk. 
  • Alex Christie ended the day going 1-for-1 with a solo homer
  • David Ayers tallied a hit in the contest and added two runs scored as well as a stolen base. 
  • Will White went 1-for-2 with an RBI. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The first inning was scoreless for both sides. In the bottom of the second, UT Martin struck first with the help of a bases loaded walk. 
  • Butler threatened the Skyhawks in the third, putting the tying run 90 feet from home but BU was unable to bring the runner home as UT Martin secured the third out of the inning. The Skyhawks added two more in the bottom half of the inning off of four hits as the UT Martin lead stood at 3-0 heading into the fourth. 
  • Ayers started the fourth with a one out single and then stole second. In the ensuing at bat, White hit an RBI single to right center putting the Dawgs on the board. BU held the Skyhawks offense in check in the bottom half of the frame as BU trailed by two heading into the fifth. 
  • Gavin reached on an error to leadoff the fifth and eventually made it home off a one out single from Gilmore. UT Martin responded to the Butler score, scratching across two runs on three hits as the Skyhawk lead stood at 5-2 heading into the back half of the game. 
  • In the top of the sixth, BU was able to scratch another across of an RBI single from Crock. The Bulldogs held UT Martin scoreless in the bottom half of the inning as the deficit stood at two. 
  • BU was able to load the bases in the seventh behind two walks and a hit by pitch. UT Martin then secured two outs putting Christie at the dish. The senior was hit by a pitch scoring one for the Dawgs. In the ensuing at bat, Crock continued his hot day belting a grand slam to right center field, giving Butler its first lead of the day at 8-5. UT Martin responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double to left field that scored two runs for the home side. BU took the 8-7 lead into the eighth inning. 
  • Butler's offense got hot in the eighth with Rhoades hitting a double to right center field setting up Gilmore to bring him in, with an RBI single. The Bulldogs added to the lead when Burgess got an RBI knock of his own, smacking a single to left center that scored Gilmore who had stolen second base to be in scoring position on the play. The Dawgs were on top 10-7, heading into the bottom half of the inning. 
  • Ultimately, the Skyhawks would have an unexpected six-run rally in the bottom of the eighth that helped the home side secure the 13-11. 
 
OF NOTE
  • Crock hit his first homer of the season, and it was a grand slam. The shortstop tallied five RBIs on the day. 
  • Gilmore has been spectacular to start the series batting .571 with eight hits in 14 plate appearances. 
  • Christie added two RBIs after coming in as a pinch hitter. 
  • BU tallied seven strikeouts in the contest.
