INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler men's soccer team scored their first goal of the season on Monday night but gave up five to visiting Memphis in the 5-1 loss. The Tigers (3-1-0) were up two goals as the first half was ticking to a close, but the Bulldogs (0-3-1) cut the deficit in half before heading to the locker room. After the break, Memphis scored three more to put the match out of reach.

"Tough result tonight. Obviously, the start didn't go the way we wanted. We put ourselves in a little bit of a hole, early, and made it tough for ourselves from there on out. In the first half, we did a nice job to get back in the game…giving ourselves a chance, getting a goal right at the end of the half. We came out and made it hard on ourselves with too many giveaways. We urged the guys at halftime to have the confidence to get at these guys and attack them, and I don't think we did a good enough job of that tonight. It's disappointing giving up five goals…a lot self-inflicted…nothing that I felt Memphis did that put us in a really tough spot. But at the end of the day, that's soccer. All we can do is focus on Lindenwood on Friday. I urged the guys after the game, 'We've got to come out and compete…and it's about mentality and how we approach these games.' I think we're in a period where we need to do a better job of coming out and playing to win the games. We'll challenge the guys with that, and we'll continue to do a better job as a staff to prepare them. Look ahead and not backwards…move on and get Lindenwood on Friday."
 
Scoring Moments

• 2' | Memphis strikes early after a takeaway deep in Butler's end. Thomas Mancuso dodges a couple of Bulldogs to pass forward to Miller Lashlee. Lashlee splits two defenders with a shot just inside the left post.
• 12' | Memphis doubles the score, ten minutes later, on an Eban McIntyre give-and-go with assistance from Renan Syrio. McIntyre's low shot from 13 yards puts the Tigers up, 2-0.
• 45' | Butler earns a corner with under a minute on the clock. Finn Moran serves to the near post, and Brendan Cunningham is there to head the ball down and at the goal. The ball ricochets off a Memphis defender and to the pitch, when Max Klein surges forward and punches it in with his outstretched foot. The Bulldogs cut the lead in half.

HALFTIME

• 53' | A service from the right side by the Tigers' Mancuso heads toward the far post. Carson Banham dives forward and heads the ball into the net from eight yards out. Memphis takes a 3-1 lead.
• 80' | Memphis attacks as Anthony Gurdko plays forward on the left side. Lashlee is there to collect the ball and, after a Bulldogs defender is tripped up, chips it just over a sliding Brooks Boersma. The lead is now three goals.
• 88' | A Memphis throw-in by Dino Savros is flipped on, off the head of Marko Stajnko. A volley by Ryan Ruguaru goes directly into the net for the Tigers' final tally.
