Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS – Morehead State quarterback Austin Gahafer accounted for 465 yards and five passing touchdowns in the Eagles 54-28 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Morehead State moves to 3-5 on the season and 2-4 in the Pioneer Football League. Butler falls to 4-6 (2-5 PFL).
BU began the afternoon by honoring the 14 seniors playing their last game in the Butler Bowl. In a pregame ceremony the 'Dawgs allowed the graduating seniors to take the field with their loved ones.
Senior quarterback
Malcolm Weaver connected with
Pace Temple in the closing seconds of the first half for the Bulldogs first touchdown. The 20-yard pitch and catch between the dynamic duo would create momentum for the offense going into the second half.
On the Eagles opening drive of the third quarter a
David Starkey forced fumble would result in a big recovery by
Ethan Brunhofer. BU had the ball on their opponents 15 and did not wait long to find the end zone.
Two plays later the tandem of Weaver and Temple proved to be too much for the Morehead State defense once more. Weaver found his go to receiver from 11 yards out and the 'Dawgs struck again, making the score 14-34.
Following a pair of Morehead State touchdowns and a field goal the offense got another head of steam. A
Duvante Lane rush for five yards got Butler to first in goal and eager to score. On the very next play Weaver threw a bullet for his third passing touchdown of the day, finding an almost uncovered
Cord Collier in the back of the end zone.
The Bulldogs got the ball back with four minutes left in the game and a 42-yard kickoff return by
Brad Sznajder would set them up with great position. A number of quick passes by Weaver would get BU to their opponent's 27-yard line. Weaver would need only one more play to find fellow senior
Danny Cotter for a touchdown. This connection would be the last score of the day for the 'Dawgs.
Weaver finished his day with 207 passing yards, going 20-34 and adding four touchdowns passes.
Lane and
Anthony Scaccia split up the load for the Bulldog rushing attack. Lane finished with 11 carries for 63-yards, while Scaccia added nine carries for 41 yards.
Temple led Butler in receiving, amassing 92-yards on eight receptions and two touchdowns.
Seniors
David Starkey,
Zach LaRoche and
Sean Horan led the BU defense, each accounting for nine total tackles. Starkey's forced fumble was the lone turnover in favor of the 'Dawgs during the game.
The Bulldogs return to action next Saturday (Nov. 12) for their final game of the season. Butler will travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on conference foe Drake. The PFL matchup will get underway at 2PM.
