Box Score 2 A Brandyce Sallee grand slam highlighted a seven-run second inning and powered Butler to an 8-7 win over Fairfield Saturday night in Chapel Hill, N.C. The win pushes Butler to 5-7 on the season with one game remaining in North Carolina against IUPUI on Sunday morning. Fairfield is now 0-3.
After Fairfield scored two runs in the top of the first, Butler responded with a single run in the bottom half of the frame. Sarah Dixon doubled and later scored on a wild pitch. That made the score 2-1 leading into the bottom of the second.
After Krosley Ogden and Maggie MacBeth had RBI singles to open the inning, Sallee came to the plate with the bases loaded and bombed her second homer of the season. Kaitlin Doud followed with a solo shot to cap the seven-run inning.
Fairfield answered with two runs in the third and tried to mount a rally in the sixth, pushing across three runs. However, Kristin Guiterrez took the circle to thwart the rally in the sixth and retired Fairfield in order in the seventh to register the save.
Dixon had three of Butler's 10 hits on the afternoon.
Doud got the start and pitched a total of two innings. Kacey Starwalt was credited with the win to improve to 2-0.
Fairfield had eight hits as four Bulldogs pitched on the evening.
Butler concludes play in Chapel Hill with a Sunday morning game with IUPUI.
