@ButlerSoftball Advances to Saturday's BIG EAST Championship Game

Box Score

Butler advanced to the championship game of the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament with a come-from-behind 10-6 win over top-seeded DePaul Friday afternoon at the Ballpark in Rosemont in suburban Chicago. The Bulldogs are now 27-22 on the season and will play Saturday afternoon against St. John's.

A seven-run fifth inning proved to be the difference. The frame included two bases-clearing hits as a Riley Carter double tied the game at six and a Sarah Dixon triple to right center gave the Bulldogs a 9-6 lead they would not relinquish.

In its third season in the BIG EAST, this is the first appearance for the Bulldogs in the BIG EAST Tournament, which brings together the top four teams in the conference for a single-elimination event. The softball team will attempt to be the second Butler team to win a BIG EAST championship, following the women's soccer program that won the BIG EAST title in the fall.

The teams traded runs through the first few innings as Butler answered a DePaul sacrifice fly in the first inning with an unearned run in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Krosley Ogden's chopper to short was bobbled and allowed pinch-runner Zoe St. Cyr to score.

In the bottom half of the inning, Dylan Christensen doubled in a run of Mikeila Boroff, who came in earlier in the inning to relieve Butler starter Kristin Gutierrez. Boroff got out of the inning, allowing just one run with a 5-2-3 double play to end the bases loaded threat.

In the third, Kaitlin Doud doubled in Alyssa Lach with two outs to tie the game at two. The lead would be short-lived as Naomi Tellez sent a shot over the left field for a grand slam that put DePaul in front 6-2.

Butler would not go quietly, putting the seven-spot on the board in the top of the fifth. Doud added an insurance run with a solo shot to left field in the sixth.

Gutierrez re-entered the game in the bottom of the fifth with one out and two runners on. Gutierrez got the final eight outs to secure the win, picking up her fourth save of the season (ironically in a game that she started).

Butler took advantage of their eight hits and two DePaul errors. The Bulldogs played without leading hitter and All-BIG EAST performer Maggie MacBeth, who is out for the weekend with an illness. Ogden, Dixon and Doud each had two hits for Butler.

Boroff got the win for Butler, improving to 10-4. She allowed five runs in 3.1 innings. Gutierrez went a total of 3.2 innings, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out five.

Morgan Maize took the loss for DePaul to fall to 18-15 on the season.

Butler advances to the championship game, which is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. (Central, 3 p.m. Eastern). The game will air on FS2 and the FOX Sports Go app. Butler's opponent is St. John's, which defeated Villanova, 10-0, in the other semifinal Friday afternoon.
