BU Wins Home Opener 2-1
Breann Pempek scored the game-winning goal for Butler on opening night with less than a minute to play in overtime as the Bulldogs held off Ohio 2-1. Pempek took a pass from
Carly Goehring to break the tie by beating the keeper to the left side. The first goal scored at the Butler Bowl came after an Ohio hand ball foul that set up
Serina Kashimoto with a penalty kick. Kashimoto took her time and buried the shot past the diving goalkeeper to the left side of the net (14:33) to give BU the lead.
Â
Butler and Eastern Michigan Tie 0-0
Butler remained undefeated over the weekend by tying Eastern Michigan 0-0. Freshman
Carly Goehring paced BU offensively with a team-high five shots.
Serina Kashimoto was also active for BU with three shots. BU took more overall shots, more shots on goal and had two more corner kicks than the Eagles, but neither team was able to find the back of the net leading to the draw. Butler only tied one opponent last year (1-1 at Cleveland State in the season opener). The Bulldogs have not been involved in a scoreless tie since the 2012 season when they hosted St. Joseph's in Atlantic 10 competition. The last 0-0 tie on the road was recorded during the 2003 campaign at Fort Wayne (IPFW).
Â
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
In a pair of overtime tilts,
Hannah Luedtke earned a 1-0-1 opening weekend mark, playing over 219 minutes in the net and surrendering just one goal for a 0.41 goals against average. The sophomore made six saves, including four in Sunday's draw at Eastern Michigan, totaling an .857 save percentage. Luedtke was credited with the win over Ohio.

MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List
Serina Kashimoto has been named to the 2016 Women's MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List (NSCAA), a prestigious individual award in college soccer presented annually to the outstanding male and female players of the year. As a junior, Kashimoto was named First Team All-BIG EAST, First Team All-Northeast Region, and Second Team All-America.
Â
Welcome Back
Butler only lost two players from last year's starting unit that won a school record 16 games.
Sophia Maccagnone and
Randi DeLong were two very important pieces to the 2015 roster, but the 'Dawgs will gladly welcome back four of their top five scorers from a year ago.
Halle Stelbasky shared the team lead with Maccagnone in overall points (21) while holding the outright edge in goals scored with nine.
Serina Kashimoto ranked third on the team with 18 points, with
Paige Monaghan (11) in fourth and
Jamison Midgley (7) tied for fifth.
