FORT WAYNE – The Bulldogs scored three quick goals in Fort Wayne on Sunday on their way to an impressive 4-0 victory over the Mastodons.
Paige Monaghan posted two goals and added two assists to lead the Bulldogs to victory.
Monaghan slipped past the Fort Wayne goalkeeper to put Butler on the scoreboard in the ninth minute of play. A pass from
Serina Kashimoto would put Monaghan in great position for her first goal of the season as she found the back of the net on the open look.
Roughly eight minutes later, Butler would double their lead with a goal from
Maeve Burger. The newcomer scored off a double assist from
Carly Goehring and Monaghan.
"That was a really solid performance by 21 players," Co-Head Coach
Tari St. John stated after the match. "There was no drop-off in our intensity or level of play which is sometimes difficult after scoring early goals."
The Butler attack didn't slow down after a 2-0 advantage as a second goal from Monaghan would blow the game wide open at the 17:25 mark. The unassisted goal came from 30 yards out from the middle of the field. The shot hit the post, but clipped the Fort Wayne keeper to roll in for the score.
The fourth and final goal of the contest came at the 53:04 mark of the second half off the foot of
Christy Chou. Monaghan was once again involved in the scoring play by passing the ball to Chou who beat the keeper with a header goal off the crossbar.
"It was a tremendous team effort and one we needed with the quick turnaround to face a strong IUPUI team on Tuesday," St. John added.
Monaghan was sensational in the win with two goals and two assists. She and the Bulldogs will look to ride this momentum into Tuesday night's game against IUPUI.
