Box Score The #10 Bulldogs opened BIG EAST play in dramatic fashion, knocking off Villanova, 3-2, in overtime Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. Butler is now 5-0-1 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST play. Villanova falls to 3-3 (0-1).
David Goldsmith, selected as the National Player of the Week by four outlets in addition to earning BIG EAST weekly honors, scored the game-winner in overtime.
Tanner Witsken had the assist on the goal in the 96
th minute.
It was Goldsmith's second goal of the match as he opened the scoring in the 18
th minute. He collected a rebound in front of the Villanova net and scored to the left side of the net.
Eric Leonard got the assist.
The teams entered the half with that score of 1-0.
Less than three minutes into the second half,
Eric Dick and a Villanova player collided just inside the box. Zach Zandi converted the resulting penalty box.
The tied game was short-lived as Goldsmith assisted
Marco Charalambous on a goal in the 55
th minute. Once again, Villanova would answer with a goal in the 72
nd minute.
The teams took that 2-2 score to overtime, setting up Goldsmith's heroics. Goldsmith now has six goals and two assists in his last three matches.
Butler had a 27-15 advantage in shots, led by nine from Goldsmith and seven from
Isaac Galliford. The Bulldogs had seven corner kicks to Villanova's four.
Dick had two saves on the afternoon. His counterpart, Will Steiner, had five saves for the Wildcats.
Butler returns to action Tuesday night with one of their last non-conference matches. The Bulldogs host Evansville at 7 p.m. at the Butler Bowl. The match will be streamed live through ButlerSports.com.
