@ButlerUFootball Hosts San Diego in Saturday PFL Match-up

Full Notes (PDF)

BACK TO THE BOWL: Butler returns to the Butler Bowl for only its second home game of the young season. The 2-2 Bulldogs will host Pioneer Football League rival San Diego Saturday at 1 p.m. The Toreros are 2-1 on the season and won their PFL opener last weekend. The game will be streamed live on ButlerSports.com.

LAST TIME OUT: DeShawn Jones's 25-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted Campbell to a 33-27 win over Butler in the PFL opener for both schools. Campbell held the lead until a Drew Bevelhimer 22-yard field goal tied the game at 20 with 13:39 to play. The teams traded touchdown to move to overtime, where Butler was unable to convert on its attempt before Campbell scored the game-winner.

THIS TIME LAST YEAR: Butler's 2015 campaign ended with some theatrics in San Diego as the host Toreros were able to stop a two-point conversion attempt in the closing seconds to secure a 28-27 win. Matt Shiltz threw for 388 yards for the Bulldogs. With San Diego leading 28-21 in the fourth quarter, Butler orchestrated a 15-play, 80-yard drive that ended in a Butler fumble recovery for a touchdown. Butler coach Jeff Voris and his Bulldogs went for the win, but unfortunately for the visitors, the conversion was intercepted.

AGAINST THE TOREROS: San Diego holds a 16-5 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to the 1993 season. The Toreros have won the last four meetings, including a 28-27 decision Nov. 21, 2015 in the last meeting between the schools. Butler's last win came on Homecoming in 2009 when David Lang connected on a 37-yard field goal in the closing seconds for a 25-24 Butler victory.

SETTING THE PACE: Sophomore Pace Temple leads the PFL in receiving yards at 100.5 per game. His 402 yards in through the first four weeks of the season are ninth in NCAA FCS. His 24 catches on the season trail only Morehead State's Jake Raymond in the conference. Through only four games, Temple has already eclipsed his freshman campaign numbers, when he had 18 catches for 214 yards.

Temple had a career-high 128 yards receiving at Campbell Saturday.

ON THE OFFENSIVE: Butler boasts the second-best offense in the PFL in terms of scoring (34.5 points per game), total offense (435 yards per game) and rushing offense (199 yards per game). The Bulldogs are also second in time of possession (32:39 per game).

WINNING THIRD DOWN: Butler's defense has allowed opponents to convert only 28.3 percent of its third down attempts. That is third in the PFL after leading the conference in that category in 2015. Conversely, Butler's offense has only been able to convert 25.5 percent of its third down opportunities. However, the Bulldogs lead the conference in first downs (95 through four games), which means the Bulldogs are moving the sticks, but all but 12 of those conversions have come on first or second down.

DUVANTE FINDING A LANE: Running back Duvante Lane has seven rushing touchdowns on the young season, tying him with Campbell's DeShawn Jones for the PFL lead. He has 277 yards through four games (sixth in the PFL), but is averaging an impressive 4.9 yards per carry. His seven touchdowns are tied for second nationally in the NCAA FCS division, trailing only Albany's Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks. Lane had his first 100-yard game as a Bulldog in the home opener Sept. 10 against Franklin.

WE SUGGEST THE FAIR CATCH OF THE DAY: Butler has a five-yard advantage over the next team in the PFL in terms of net punting. The Bulldogs average 40.4 yards per punt. The punt coverage has been so good that the Bulldogs are actually forcing opposing punt returners into negative yardage (-0.5 yards per punt). That mark is fifth nationally. Senior Ian Dobek averages 41.1 yards per punt, which is second in the conference. Three of his 16 punts have been 50 yards or more, while five have landed inside the 20.

DUAL THREAT: Redshirt senior Malcolm Weaver leads the PFL in total offense at 262 yards per game. He had a career-best 114 yards (on just seven carries) Saturday at Taylor, highlighted by a 70-yard scoring drive. He has thrown for 875 yards through the air.

QUICK STRIKES: Butler leads the PFL in time of possession, but a majority of their touchdown drives have been incredibly efficient (and short). Entering Saturday's game at Campbell, only one of Butler's 14 touchdown drives had been longer than four minutes this season. Against Campbell, two of the three touchdown drives were north of the four-minute mark, as Butler used nine plays on each one.

HOME COOKING: The Bulldogs started the 2016 home schedule off with a win over Franklin Sept. 10. Butler displayed a 5-0 home mark in 2015. That Butler team was the first since 2012 to go undefeated at the Butler Bowl.

KEEPING THE JERSEYS CLEAN: The Bulldogs are fourth in the PFL in pass offense, but despite all the dropbacks, the team has allowed only two sacks on the season. San Diego leads the conference by allowing only one sack this season, but the Toreros have only played three games to Butler's four.

FRESH LEGS: Freshman Drew Bevelhimer connected on the first field goal attempt of his Butler career, knocking home a 47-yarder in the third quarter Sept. 10 against Franklin. He went 8-of-8 on PATs as well in that game. He followed that up with a 2-of-2 performance on field goal attempts at Taylor. He is 5-of-7 on field goals in his short Butler career.

BIG PLAYS BY THE D: Linebacker Ethan Brunhofer led the Bulldogs at Campbell with 10 tackles and an interception. His night included three solo tackles and one tackle for loss. Sean Horan and Zach LaRoche each had nine stops.

IT'S SO PRETTY, LET'S PLAY TWO: The 2016 schedule for the Bulldogs will be identical to the 2015 slate as Butler opens with Indiana State, Franklin and Taylor before facing off with the same eight PFL foes as they did a season ago.
