INDIANAPOLIS – The BIG EAST women's soccer match between Butler and Xavier ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie on Thursday night with each team avoiding the loss column. Butler moves to 9-1-3 on the year with a 2-0-2 mark in the BIG EAST. Xavier is now 7-4-3 in 2017 with a 3-0-1 conference record.
The shutout performance by Butler allowed the 2017 team to tie the all-time school record for most shutouts recorded in a single-season. This group tied the 2012 team that notched 11 shutouts as part of a 12-5-4 season. BU kept the Musketeers off the scoreboard despite playing with just 10 players for both overtime periods. Defender
Annika Schmidt received two yellow cards late in the second half which forced her to the sideline.
Butler's best chance to score came midway through the first half on a
Paige Monaghan shot. Monaghan planted her outside foot and moved the ball back towards the center of the field before firing the shot on goal. Xavier keeper Toni Bizzarro got a hand on it, but was unable to hold on. The ball bounced to a Xavier defender and she was able to send the ball out to the opposite sideline to keep the game scoreless.
Monaghan led all players with four shots. Butler ended the match with eight total, one more than their opponent. Saves favored Xavier 6-2 as did corner kicks 2-0.
Butler once again used two goalkeepers with
Hannah Luedtke getting the start and
Leonie Doege entering for the final 65 minutes of playing time. Doege finished the match with two saves.
The Bulldogs will return to the Sellick Bowl on Sunday afternoon with a 1PM kickoff against St. John's. The match will stream on Facebook Live.
