The Bulldogs split a pair of Saturday contests at the Total Control Sports Invitational in Rosemont, Ill. Butler lost a 7-6 decision to Western Illinois in the morning before rebounding for an 8-0, five-inning win over Green Bay later in the afternoon. With the pair of decisions, Butler is now 3-1 on the season.
Against Green Bay, freshman
Gabbi Schnaiter hurled the first shutout of her young career, keeping the Phoenix at bay for five innings. Schnaiter scattered three hits and one walk while striking out six batters.
The Bulldogs exploded for six runs in the third inning and added two in the fourth.
Jenna Foreman had three hits for the Bulldogs, and
Kaitlin Doud added both a double and a triple. Doud's 2-for-2 day included a pair of RBIs.
Cheyenne Thompson also went 2-for-2 and
Audrey Hiner had a two-run single.
In the opener, Western Illinois overcame a 3-0 deficit with five runs over their last two at-bats to take a 7-6 win.
Freshman
Madi Christiansen led the Butler attack with three hits.
Jenna Foreman and
Brandyce Sallee each had two hits for the Bulldogs, who had 11 in the game. Sallee and freshman
Christina Candotti each drove in a pair of runs.
WIU turned eight hits into seven runs. Four of those hits and three of those runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Butler closes out play in Rosemont Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. (Eastern) game against UIC. The Flames are one of two hosts of the weekend event.
