PONTIAC, Mich. – The Butler women's lacrosse team moved to 0-2 on the young season after taking a 20-9 loss at Detroit on Saturday afternoon. The high scoring first half featured a 15-7 Titan advantage while the two teams only combined for seven goals over the final 30 minutes of action.
Haley Hallenbeck and
Journey Fischbeck shouldered the scoring load for the Bulldogs combining for seven of the nine goals on the day. Hallenbeck moved her season goal total to seven while also adding two ground balls and two draw controls to her stat line.
Fischbeck was all over the field with three goals and two assists for a team-high five points. Six of her team-high eight shots were on goal and she also tied for the team lead with two caused turnovers.
Detroit was led by a trio of players in Morgan Girardi, Lexie Kinmond and Jordyn Beam. Girardi led the way with five goals, but it was Kinmond coming up with the most points on the day. Kinmond scored four goals and added a team-high three assists. The third member of the trio was Beam, an attacker that ended the day with four goals and three caused turnovers.
The opening stages of the first half featured back and forth action as the two teams came together at 4-4 at the 18:25 mark. Hallenbeck scored three of the opening four goals for the Bulldogs with the fourth coming from Fischbeck.
Detroit would make their move following the tie by scoring three-straight goals to post a 7-4 advantage. Two of the three came off a free position shot. The game would move to 9-5 in favor of Detroit after back-to-back goals from Brianna Plester.
Plester's outbreak signaled the start of a 7-0 UDM scoring run. Brittany Fenney would find the back of the net with 2:42 remaining to push the Titan lead to 14-5. Butler would finish the half on a high note by getting goals from Hallenbeck and Fischbeck to take an eight-point deficit into halftime.
The tempo definitely slowed down in the second half, but Detroit remained in the driver's seat by scoring the first four goals of the second frame. Fischbeck broke the streak with an unassisted goal at the 18:33 mark and
Taylor Kinn would cap off the scoring with a goal in the final seconds of the contest.
