LORMAN, Miss. – Butler took a 13-8 setback to Alcorn State in game one, but answered with a 5-0 win in the nightcap on Saturday to move their overall record to 5-2. The first contest was a full nine inning game while the second half of the doubleheader ended after seven innings.
A 10-run inning led Alcorn State to victory in game one, but
Connor Mitchell would take the hill and blank the Braves in game two. Mitchell tossed seven full innings in the nightcap, limiting Alcorn State to just one hit. He finished his outing just under 100 pitches and notched a season-high 10 strikeouts.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead near the midway point of game one after scoring an unearned run in the second and adding a solo home run from
Chris Maranto in the top of the fourth. The Braves countered with two runs in the bottom half of four after coming up with four-straight singles.
The game wouldn't stay tied for long as
Gehrig Parker hit a one-out home run to right field giving BU the 3-2 lead.
Neither team would get anything going in the sixth, but the seventh inning would decide the outcome with Alcorn State scoring 10 runs off seven hits. Butler scored five runs over the final two innings of action, but the 10-run seventh would be too much to overcome.
Tyler Houston was the top BU performer in game one with three hits, two RBI, three stolen bases and a run scored. Maranto added another hit and RBI to his stat line to finish 2-for-4 from the plate with two walks and Parker would move forward to post two hits and three runs scored.
The Bulldogs used freshman
Ryan Pepiot on the mound for the first four innings of the game. Pepiot struck out six and walked three before exiting the contest. Alcorn recorded five hits off the righty to generate two earned runs.
Brock Balderson would replace Pepiot on the hill and be hit with the loss (0-1). The 'Dawgs would be forced to use four additional arms during game one of the DH with
Jack Pilcher,
Josh Goldberg,
Josh Walker and
Sam Hubbe also getting involved. Those four combined for six outs.
The bullpen would take the afternoon off in game two with Mitchell going the distance to earn his first win of the year. Butler would score four runs in the fourth and add one more in the fifth to win the game.
All four runs in the fourth came with two outs in the inning.
Michael Hartnagel delivered an RBI single up the middle of the field after a Brave error and Parker would end up with a triple that sent Hartnagel all the way around to score.
Michael DiViesti followed Parker in the order with a double down the left field line. DiViesti would advance to third base on a wild pitch and
Cole Malloy would allow him to score by laying down a bunt single.
The solo run in the fifth was unique as Houston terrorized the Braves on the base paths. Houston recorded a double down the left field line and then would steal third with two outs.
Jordan Lucio would earn a base on balls and make a break for second. Houston stole home on the play, but the inning would end with Lucio being tagged.
The four-game series between Butler and Alcorn State will end tomorrow with a single game at McGowan Stadium. First pitch is slated for 12:30 PM.
