Through the first two days and four games of the Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla., the Bulldogs have posted a 3-1 record. Butler will take its current three-game winning streak into Sunday's lone game, a 9 a.m. first pitch against Central Connecticut State.
Butler is 10-11 on the season.
The Bulldogs swept two games on Saturday, taking a 5-4 win over Yale in the morning followed by a 5-1 decision over tournament host South Florida in the afternoon.
Against Yale, the Bulldogs got out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second, followed by a
Sarah Dixon solo homer to left field leading off the bottom of the third. After Yale tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs pushed across the eventual game-winner in the bottom half of the inning.
Once again, it was early runs that proved to be the difference for Butler in the afternoon win over South Florida. Dixon's single scored
Maggie MacBeth in the first inning. Later in the inning,
Alyssa Lach's squeeze bunt got Dixon to the plate.
USF scored once in the bottom of the inning off Butler starter
Gabbi Schnaiter. It would be the only run that the freshman allowed in her seven innings of work.
The Bulldogs were provided with some breathing room in the second inning, pushing across a pair of unearned runs.
Cheyenne Thompson closed out the scoring in the seventh inning as her bunt single with the bases loaded scored
Jenna Foreman.
Schnaiter allowed only three hits and two walks in her complete game.
In Friday's play, the Bulldogs lost, 10-2, to La Salle in six innings before posting a 5-2 win over Monmouth.
All three of Butler's hits against LaSalle came in the first inning as Butler pushed its two runs across. MacBeth and Foreman had back-to-back singles and then a double steal with one out put them at second and third.
Madi Christiansen stepped to the plate and singled to left field, scoring both.
La Salle scored in five of the six innings, including five unearned runs that came at the hands of three Butler errors.
???????
Mikeila Boroff took the loss for the Bulldogs.
In the win over Monmouth, Schnaiter also got the start. The Bulldogs scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. After each team scored in the fourth inning, Thompson's two-run homer in the fifth gave Butler a 5-1 lead that would become a 5-2 victory.
The Bulldogs return to action with Sunday's single game before returning home to Indianapolis.
