INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs scored 13 runs off 12 hits on Sunday afternoon to post a 10-run victory against Fort Wayne.
Michael Hartnagel paced the BU bats with a 3-for-3 day with three runs scored. The win on the mound went to
Connor Mitchell (2-0).
Fort Wayne got on the scoreboard first with a single run in the fourth inning, but the Bulldogs erupted for five runs in the bottom half of the inning. BU would add five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take complete control and three more runs would cross home plate in the seventh to push the scoreboard to 13-3.
The Mastodons made four costly errors on the day to help BU blow the game open. Only five of the 13 runs were earned.
Hartnagel led off the fourth inning with a double to right center. The other extra base hit for BU was delivered by
Kyle Niemiec who entered the game in right field. Niemiec hit a ball off the wall in left field in the seventh inning. That hit scored Hartnagel to increase the BU lead.
Jordan Lucio also impacted the game by going 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Harrison Freed,
Chris Maranto and
Tyler Houston also helped the cause by recording two RBI each.
The win would go to Mitchell, however the start belonged to
Ryan Pepiot. The freshman tossed four complete innings and struck out seven. He allowed one earned run off two hits.
Mitchell threw 3.2 innings of action and struck out four batters before leaving the mound. The tall lefty didn't walk a single batter during his outing.
The final two arms to throw on Sunday combined for four outs.
Ottavio Dattolo and
Danny Pobereyko came out of the bullpen to keep Fort Wayne off balance. Dattolo struck out one, and allowed two hits. Pobereyko didn't allow a hit during his time on the rubber.
Butler will return to action tomorrow for a 3 PM game against Western Illinois.
