The Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from Villanova Saturday, winning 4-1 and 5-0 contests to get off to a strong start to the weekend three-game series. Butler is now 15-17 on the season and 3-1 in BIG EAST play.
Saturday's doubleheader was played at Grand Park in Westfield due to the amount of water on Butler's field from recent rain. Sunday's noon first pitch is expected to be played on Butler's campus.
Pinch-hitter Sammy Anderson was the difference-maker in the opening game. She came to the plate with two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Her flare to short right field caused Villanova's second baseman and right fielder to collide. The ball rolled down the right field line and Anderson made the complete loop for a three-run, inside-the-park home run.
That provided
Gabbi Schnaiter with the win. The freshman pitched all seven innings, scattering six hits and four walks. She improved to 6-8 on the season. She was aided by two double plays by the Bulldogs' defense.
In the second game, Butler got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first. It came off an RBI single from freshman
Madi Christiansen. The teams then traded zeros until the bottom of the fourth.
In that frame, an RBI double from
Christina Candotti and two-run triple from
Kaitlin Doud accounted for three runs.
Butler added one more run in the fifth.
Jenna Foreman singled to open the inning. She went 3-for-3 in the second game and had five hits in six at-bats Saturday. Her third stolen base of the day and 17
th of the season put her at second, where
Brandyce Sallee knocked her in with a single.
Mikeila Boroff pitched the shutout for the Bulldogs, allowing only four hits and two walks in the complete game. She improves to 4-4 on the season. Boroff induced two double plays that made quick work of the few baserunners she allowed.
Butler's nine hits came off three Villanova pitchers. Caitlyn Dickman took the loss for the Wildcats.
The series concludes with a single game Sunday at noon.
