Creighton took both ends of a Saturday doubleheader in Omaha, Neb., as Butler traveled west for a weekend BIG EAST series. The host Blue Jays won the opener, 4-3, in dramatic fashion, and then had more breathing room in the nightcap, winning 11-2 in five innings.
With the results, Butler is now 5-8 in BIG EAST play and 17-26 overall. Creighton is 8-6 in conference and 18-23 on the season. The teams entered the day separated by only a half-game in the BIG EAST standings, straddling the line of being in or out of the four-team BIG EAST Tournament.
In the first game, Creighton got out to a 3-0 lead through three innings. Butler scored an unearned run in the fourth as
Sarah Dixon singled and stole second before advancing to third on an error.
Cheyenne Thompson got her home with a suicide squeeze.
Butler tied the game in the top of the sixth with a two-run blast from
Alyssa Lach. It was her first home run of the 2017 season.
Creighton won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Tash Coffiel led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. A double put runners on second and third and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Allie Reinhart's deep fly ball to center field allowed Coffiel to tag up for the game-winning run.
Freshman
Gabbi Schnaiter came on in relief in the fourth inning. The seventh inning run was the only one shoe allowed. She allowed three hits in 3.1 innings.
Kaitlin Doud got the start for Butler, allowing three runs (two earned).
Jenna Foreman and Dixon each had two hits for Butler. Those were four of the five hits allowed by Bryana Clark, who went the distance for Creighton to improve to 9-9 on the season.
In the second game, Dixon's two-run home run with two outs in the top of the third staked the Bulldogs to a 2-0 advantage. That would be the score until Creighton put six runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth followed by five in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Michal Hylton got the win for Creighton. She is now 7-10 on the season. The Blue Jays got home runs from Sam Dellinger and Anna O'Gorman among their 11 hits.
Mikeila Boroff took the loss for Butler, allowing five runs in 3.2 innings of work. Only one of those runs were earned as Butler had two errors in the contest.
Kacey Starwalt and Doud came on in relief.
The teams will play a single game Sunday. The first pitch is set for Noon (ET, 11 a.m. Omaha/Central). A video feed and live stats are available. Butler will look to end a nine-game losing streak.
