Box Score
Powered by four home runs, Butler defeated Creighton, 10-7, Sunday afternoon in Omaha.
The win snaps a nine-game skid for the Bulldogs who are now 6-8 in BIG EAST play (18-26 overall). Creighton is 18-24 and 8-7 in league play. The two teams are looking to be in the top four of the BIG EAST standings to earn a berth to next month's conference tournament in suburban Chicago.
In search of a series sweep, Creighton jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings.
One swing from freshman
Kennedy Minko catapulted the Bulldogs back into the game. Her three-run home run to left field pulled the Bulldogs within 5-3 in the top of the third inning.
That would be the score until the fifth inning when the Bulldogs mounted a two-out rally.
Christina Candotti's double scored
Alyssa Lach. The next batter to the dish was
Kaitlin Doud, who homered down the left-field line to put the Bulldogs ahead 6-5.
Doud was 3-for-3 on the day, adding a single and double to her long ball.
The Bulldogs would find some necessary breathing room in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third with two outs after a sacrifice bunt, coach
Scott Hall called on
Maggie MacBeth as a pinch-hitter. Working her way back from a knee injury, MacBeth got hold of a pitch and deposited it over the right field fence for her first career home run.
Brandyce Sallee followed with a solo shot to left center for the Bulldogs' fourth home run of the day and a 10-5 lead.
Creighton would push two across in the bottom of the seventh before Doud forced a groundout with two runners on to secure the 10-7 win.
Doud came on in relief of starter
Gabbi Schnaiter, pitching six innings and allowing four runs (two earned). Doud is now 5-7 on the season.
Michal Hylton took the loss in relief for Creighton. She is now 7-11. Sam Dellinger hit two home runs for the Blue Jays.
In addition to MacBeth's first career home run, Sallee's blast was her first of 2017. Minko (four) and Doud (three) are just off the pace of team-leader
Sarah Dixon's five this season.
The Bulldogs are without a mid-week game and their next action is a three-game trip at Seton Hall. The teams will play a Saturday doubleheader and single game Sunday in New Jersey.
