Butler kept itself in the driver's seat for a BIG EAST Tournament berth, knocking off Georgetown 9-7 Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs improve to 21-28 overall and 9-9 in conference play heading into a Sunday doubleheader.
Georgetown is now 11-35 (4-14 BIG EAST). The teams moved the weekend schedule around due to the amount of rain that Indianapolis has received in recent days. Sunday's doubleheader will begin at 10Â a.m. and Butler's seniors will be recognized between games.
All nine of Butler's runs came in the first two innings. In the first,
Kaitlin Doud sent a 1-2 pitch off the left field wall to score two runs. Kennedy Minko added an RBI single later in the inning for the 3-1 Butler lead.
After Georgetown tied the game in the second inning on Delaney Osterday's two-run home run, the Bulldogs put up a six-spot in the bottom of the frame. A three-run triple by
Madi Christiansen highlighted the inning.
The teams traded scoreless frames until Georgetown pushed across four runs in the top of the seventh. The final out came with the tying run at second base.
Mikeila Boroff got the start for Butler, going five innings to get the win (6-8). She allowed seven hits and three runs, while striking out five.
Anna Brooks Pacha took the loss for Georgetown. In 1.0-plus innings of work, she allowed eight earned runs.
Jenna Foreman had three of Butler's nine hits.
Brandyce Sallee, who earlier in the day walked as part of Butler's Graduation Ceremonies, had three walks and a single in her four plate appearances.
The teams trailing Butler in the league standings each played two games Saturday. Creighton dropped a pair of games to DePaul, while Providence and Villanova split. The Bulldogs will secure one of the four spots in next week's BIG EAST Tournament with a win in either game Sunday regardless of Providence's Sunday result against Villanova.
