In a match-up of Top 25 teams, Butler dropped a 1-0 decision at Louisville Monday night. With the result, the No. 25 Bulldogs fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 2-0.
The No. 9 Cardinals had a 12-8 advantage in shots with the eventual game-winner coming off the right foot of Tim Kubel in the 39
th minute. The low blast from 20 yards out caught the inside of the left post and ricocheted in the net with the assist coming from Tate Schmitt.
Less than two minutes before, Butler junior captain
Jared Timmer had to be carted off the field with an apparent lower leg injury.
Senior keeper
Eric Dick had five saves for the Bulldogs. His counterpart, Louisville's Jake Gelnovatch, had four saves in posting the shutout.
Three offsides calls squandered Butler opportunities in the early minutes of the contest. The two best chances of the first half for the Bulldogs came in the 30
th and 34
th minutes, respectively.
Isaac Galliford's volley attempt off an
Alex Lehtinen cross was pushed wide, followed by a miscommunication and failed clear by the Louisville defense. The ball was eventually headed to
Bennett Kim, but his shot went wide.
After Louisville controlled possession for much of the second half, the Bulldogs had two opportunities in the final five minutes of the match, looking for the equalizer.
Michael Peay sent a cross from the left side and Galliford's resulting low liner went just left of the frame in the 86

Eric Leonard collected the ball about 20 yards out and his right-footed blast got by Gelnovatch but squarely hit the right post.
Peay, Galliford and Leonard each had two shots for Butler; both of Peay's shots were on goal.
Butler's next contests come this weekend in Bloomington, Ind., as the Bulldogs will face South Florida Friday and San Francisco Sunday in an event hosted by Indiana University.
