The Bulldogs take a 1-1 mark to Bloomington, Ind., this weekend for the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic hosted by Indiana University. Butler won't face the host team, but has match-ups with South Florida and San Francisco, respectively. The match with South Florida is scheduled for Friday, while the Bulldogs and San Francisco will play Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
Live stats for both matches will be available, but the matches will not be streamed.
Butler's match-up with Indiana will come in Indianapolis at the Sellick Bowl on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
The Bulldogs are ranked in the Top 25 of all three major polls this week: No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, No. 19 in the College Soccer News rankings, and No. 21 with Top Drawer Soccer.
South Florida will be the third consecutive opponent for the Bulldogs to open the season that also appeared in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
Butler is coming off a 1-0 loss at No. 9 Louisville on Monday night. The Cardinals' goal came in the 39
th minute. Two chances in the final five minutes nearly tied the match but
Isaac Galliford's shot in the 86
th minute just went left of the frame and senior
Eric Leonard's blast from 20 yards out caught the right post moments later.
Leonard, also a captain, leads the team with nine shots through two matches.
Senior keeper
Eric Dick had five saves in the contest, following a 1-0 shutout win in the season-opener against UIC, the reigning Horizon League Tournament champion. That was the 20
th solo shutout of Dick's career.
In the first half of the Louisville match, Butler lost junior captain
Jared Timmer to a lower leg injury. He will miss the remainder of the season after following up 2016 BIG EAST All-League first team honors with a spot on the 2017 preseason All-BIG EAST squad. He led the Bulldogs and the BIG EAST with nine assists in 2016.
Timmer scored the game-winner in the overtime win over UIC to open the season, heading in a free kick from sophomore
Lewis Suddick. Suddick joined Timmer on the All-BIG EAST preseason team after being selected to the conference's All-Newcomer Team a season ago.
The Bulldogs are also without midfielder
Marco Charalambous, who injured his knee over the summer and will miss the 2017 season.
CoachÂ
Paul Snape returns a talented roster as he enters his seventh season in charge of the Butler program. The Bulldogs are coming off their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010 after spending much of the 2016 season ranked in the Top 25 nationally. The season culminated in winning the BIG EAST Tournament and receiving the No. 15 national seed in the NCAA Tournament. Butler finished the campaign with a record of 13-5-2.
Entering this weekend's contests, Snape has a record of 53-41-20. The Butler coaching staff, led by Snape, was named the NSCAA (now referred to as United Soccer Coaches) Great Lakes Region Staff of the Year for Division I institutions in 2016. This honor is a result of a vote by other coaches in the region.
Fifteen Bulldogs have seen action through the team's first two matches of the season. That includes the first Butler minutes for SMU transfer
Brandon Guhl as well as true freshman
Joel Harvey. With the loss of Timmer, Snape will most likely pull another player or two into the fold.
Following the two contests over the weekend in Bloomington, Butler returns to Indianapolis and will host Western Michigan on Friday, Sept. 8. Butler Athletics will stream that match through Facebook Live.
