Quarterback
Will Marty's one-yard dive with seven seconds remaining gave Butler a 27-21 win over Taylor Saturday night at the newly-dedicated Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis.
With the win, Butler improves to 2-1; Taylor is now 1-1.
The Bulldogs held the lead throughout much of the contest until Taylor took a 21-20 lead on an 18-yard Spencer Crisp touchdown run with 7:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. On the previous play, the Trojans were able to convert a 4
th and 6 with a 15-yard pass.
But the heroics belonged to the Bulldogs as more than 4,000 fans packed the stands for the team's only game under the lights this season and a whiteout promotion. Butler was forced to punt on their initial drive after Taylor took the lead, but the Bulldogs defense forced a punt and gave the ball back to Marty with 3:19 on the clock at the Taylor 43.
A field goal would win the game, and for much of the drive, it looked like that would be the end result as Marty connected twice with
Anthony Scaccia and twice with
Nick Weaver. Weaver had a career-best eight receptions on the night. Taylor called timeouts to preserve the clock as Butler approached the goal line. Coach
Jeff Voris dialed up Marty's number on a keeper with seven seconds remaining and the plunge gave Butler the win. The Bulldogs had timeouts remaining if they needed to line up for the winning field goal.
Butler took a 10-0 lead on a
Sam Schrader one-yard touchdown run midway through the first period and extended the lead to 17-7 as Marty found
James Marbaugh on a back-shoulder throw from six yards out in the second quarter. A
Drew Bevelhimer 43-yard field goal gave the Bulldogs a 20-14 halftime lead.
One touchdown apiece was the only second-half scoring.
Marty completed 32-of-48 attempts for 239 yards. Weaver had 64 yards receiving. Freshman
Cam Cooper had a career-high four catches and 43 yards, mirroring numbers from
Pace Temple.
Duvante Lane had 57 yards rushing for Butler.
Ethan Brunhofer had eight tackles to lead the Bulldogs.
Xavier Colvin had 1.5 tackles for loss. Â
The Bulldogs open Pioneer Football League play next weekend, traveling to San Diego for a 5 p.m. (Eastern, 2 p.m. Pacific) kick-off. The Toreros will stream the game. Â
