The Bulldogs capped a strong weekend of play at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships as both Butler doubles duos fell in the semifinals to seeded opponents.
The championships are being held in Knoxville, Tenn.
Butler entered Sunday morning with two of the four teams remaining in the 64-team doubles bracket.
Seniors
Aviv Ben Shabat and
Mason Dragos were across the net from the No. 9 seeds, Hendrik Inno and Marko Ilics from Belmont.
Belmont got a break at 5-5 in the opening set to take a 7-5 decision. The Bulldogs rebounded to post a 6-3 result in the second set. That pushed the match to a third-set match tiebreaker.
Inno and Ilics got out to an early lead, but the Butler duo was able to square the tiebreaker at 4-4. After the teams traded points to 5-5, Belmont won five of the final six points to pull out the 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (6) win.
Michael Dickson and
Adrian Mag faced off with Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos of Tennessee, the No. 2 seeds. The Volunteers were playing on their home indoor courts.
Tennessee took the opening set, 6-1. The Bulldogs worked their way back in the second set, as the teams traded a series of breaks. Butler got out in front 4-2 before the Volunteers won three consecutive games to retake a 5-4 advantage. After the Bulldogs leveled the set at 5-5, Tennessee took back-to-back games to win the match, 6-1, 7-5.
Both Butler doubles teams posted 4-1 records in advancing to the semifinals. Five of those wins came against seeded teams in the 64-team field.
This is the farthest a Butler doubles team has advanced at the ITA Regionals since 2016 when Ben Shabat andÂ
Ari Gerstein knocked off three seeded teams to reach the semifinals before falling.
The Bulldogs are back in action Oct. 26-28, traveling to Purdue for the Black & Gold Invitational.
